Canucks still unbeaten, Panthers break through

The Vancouver Canucks preserved their perfect record through three games in the NHL, shutting out the Edmonton Oilers 2-0 on Friday.

Radim Vrbata, Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin all combined in Vancouver's two goals, with Vrbata making it one goal in each of the Canucks' wins to cap a brilliant start to his career in Canada.

Vrbata, formerly of the Arizona Coyotes, put Vancouver ahead at Edmonton's Rexall Place deep into the second period.

Assisted by the Sedin brothers, Vrbata's snap shot beat Edmonton goaltender Ben Scrivens.

It looked as if the goal would be enough for Vancouver, and they sealed the win with 15 seconds to play - Daniel Sedin tapping into an empty net with Henrik Sedin and Vrbata earning assists.

The Anaheim Ducks came from behind to post their fourth win in a row, and become the first team to break through the Minnesota Wild's defence in a 2-1 result.

The Wild scored eight goals across their first two matches without concession, and preserved that record through two periods against the Ducks.

Minnesota took the lead through Jason Zucker's goal early in the second period, but the Ducks responded in the final period - Andrew Cogliano and Corey Perry scoring crucial goals for Anaheim.

The Nashville Predators sit atop the Western Conference's Central division, after a 2-0 shutout of the Winnipeg Jets.

Pekka Rinne withstood 31 shots in goal for Nashville, while Mike Ribeiro and James Neal scored for the winners with Anton Volchenkov earning an assist in each goal.

Johan Franzen scored the Detroit Red Wings' first two goals as they cantered past the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1.

The Columbus Blue Jackets held off a fast-finishing Calgary Flames to win 3-2, with Matt Calvert scoring once and also notching an assist for the winners.

The Florida Panthers broke through for their first win of the season, edging the Buffalo Sabres 1-0.

Sean Bergenheim's goal three minutes into the second period was enough for the Panthers, as goaltender Roberto Luongo made 26 saves.
